Missing Child Procedures |
1. When a child is missing, the parent or guardian who is missing their
child should go immediately to the guard on the main beach chair and relay
the following information: A. Child's Name B. Child's Age and Description C. Child's Suit Color D. Child's Emblem E. Where the child was last seen 2. This information is to be stated repeatedly over the megaphone by the guard on the main beach chair. 3. After this information is obtained, the guard will stand and blow 5 whistles. This is done so that the other guards and members are aware that there is a missing child situation. 4. At this point, the waterfront should be cleared so that members, 13 years of age or older, can begin assisting the guards in forming a human chain at both ends of the shallow water. Participation by the members is essential! A. The chain should be formed by guards and members linking arms, pulling as closely together as possible. B. The guard on main beach chair will signal both lines when to begin progressing forward. (It is important to walk slowly and shuffle your feet as much as possible.) C. The lines will progress forward until they meet. At this point, if the child is not found, participants in the chain should unlink arms, turn around, link arms again, and repeat the procedure in the opposite direction. 5. Two guards will immediately go to the spot where the child was last seen; only guards will participate in deep water search. Office staff will search locker rooms, playground areas, parking lot, and racquet center. 6. When the child is found, he/she should be brought promptly to the main beach chair, so that the search can be brought to a halt. NOTE: We recommend that only a few adults remain on the beach and watch their children and their friends' children. This will enable more adults to participate in the human chain. We would also recommend that the parents of young children take the time out to explain the 5 whistle procedure to their children. It is essential for each child to know where he/she is supposed to go in this situation. 7. Drills will be performed once every 3 weeks.
